I think it gives students a feeling of ownership in the classroom. It could/should be framed as an initial trust between teacher and student that students can live up to.

Input into seating is a good idea, as long as it comes with a set of responsibilities students must follow.

I don't think students are going to be making seating decisions with learning in mind... more likely what seat will get me closer to my friends... which may actually detract from the learning environment.
